What Is Back Stitching & How Do You Do It?

What Is Back Stitching & How Do You Do It?

Have you ever wondered why some cross stitch designs look more refined and detailed than others? This is the result of a technique called back stitching, and it can really make a big difference to the finished result of your cross stitch projects.

In this post, we will cover what back stitching is in more and how to master the technique so that you can use it in your projects.

What is Back Stitching?

Many cross stitch patterns include back stitching instructions, typically shown as lines on the pattern in a different colour or style than the symbols for cross stitches.

Back stitching is a simple technique that follows a straight stitch to create outlines, add finer details like facial features or text to cross stitch projects. If you’re new to back stitching, or even a beginner to cross stitch itself, you’ll find that many patterns also include instructions showing you how to do back stitching.

Why Back Stitching is a Good Technique to Learn

Within the world of cross stitch, back stitching plays quite an important role, even though it’s a simple technique to learn and follow. Here are just a few reasons why learning to back stitch is something that’s good to learn as a cross stitcher.

  • It adds definition and intricate detail to your designs
  • It creates depth and allows you to create designs that really pop
  • It helps direct the eye to the most important parts of the design

If you’ve ever created a cross stitch design and felt like it just needed a little something, then this is where back stitching can really make a difference.

When Should You Do Back Stitching?

Although there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to back stitching, there are certain things that can make the process a little easier and overall more effective. One of these is the timing of adding your back stitch.

In general, most cross stitchers find it easier to complete their cross stitch design and then add their back stitch finishing touches. Here are a few reasons why this tends to work best:

  • You’ll avoid stitching over your back stitches
  • You can view the full design, making it easier to see where the finer details should go
  • With all the cross stitches in place, it’s easier to follow the back stitch lines

However, as mentioned above, there are no strict rules and it’s about finding the right way of working for you. While some people prefer doing it this way, there are others who find it easier to complete their back stitch as they go through the design, which can be especially beneficial for larger projects.

How to do Back Stitching: The Step-by-Step Process

In this next section, you’ll learn everything you need to know in order to get started with back stitching so that you can confidently implement the technique in your next cross stitch project.

Materials you’ll need for back stitching

Having the proper materials and accessories for your cross stitch projects and for back stitching is one of the most important things to start with. Here are some of the things we recommend you have on hand before you start:

  • Your completed cross stitch project (if following this method)
  • Embroidery floss
  • A sharp needle with a small eye
  • Scissors
  • Your chosen pattern with back stitch markings

A simple back stitch technique to follow

Now that you have your supplies organised and are ready to begin your first back stitch, here’s a simple and easy to follow technique:

  • Secure the thread: Start by bringing your needle up from the back of your fabric at point A (the beginning of your back stitch line).
  • Create the first stitch: Insert your needle back down through the fabric at point B (usually one or two squares away, depending on your pattern).
  • Continue the line: Bring your needle back up at point C, which is the same distance beyond point B.
  • Complete your next stitch: Insert your needle back down at point B, creating a stitch that connects points C and B.
  • Repeat the process: Bring your needle up at point D (beyond point C), then back down at point C. Continue this pattern, always bringing the needle up at a new point and back down at the previous exit point.

We have lots of videos over on our YouTube channel which will also introduce you to the backstitching method, and give you lots of step-by-step visual guides for getting started. Here's one to get you started:

Tips for back stitching neatly

To get the best results from your cross stitch project, ensuring that your back stitch is neat and tidy will make all the difference. Here are our top tips to help you:

  • Use the right amount of floss: Most patterns call for one strand of floss for back stitching, which creates a fine line. Using too many strands can make your back stitching look bulky.
  • Keep tension consistent: Try to maintain the same tension for all your back stitches to create a smooth, even line.
  • Follow the pattern carefully: Back stitch lines on patterns are precise and it’s best to follow them exactly for  the best results.
  • Work in manageable sections: Rather than trying to complete one very long line of back stitching, break it down into smaller sections.
  • Pay attention to direction: Sometimes the direction of your back stitches matters for the overall effect, particularly for elements like fur or hair.

Creative Ways to Use Back Stitching In Your Projects

As you start to build your confidence with back stitching, you’ll see that there are lots of interesting and creative ways to put this simple technique to use. Here are just a few of the ones we recommend:

  • Text and lettering: Back stitching is perfect for adding meaningful text to your project
  • Facial features: These smaller details often look more natural when done through back stitching
  • Plant details: Create delicate stems, branches, or vibrant floral designs
  • Animal features: Perfect for adding things like whiskers or other features that animal lovers will appreciate
  • Architectural elements: Use back stitching to create intricate details like window frames, roof lines, and other structural details
