I'm so excited to be included in the special Summer 2017 issue of Cross Stitcher magazine as I know so many of you are subscribers! I spoke all about my inspiration behind my cross stitch kit 'Watercolour Alphabet' and shared some of my early sketches when designing the piece.
The magazine also includes a 22-page Celebrate Summer chart special with beautiful boho makes, from a feather headdress to cool camera strap. The bumper issue also comes with a kit perfect for summer –a festival-style bracelet, complete with leather-style cuff for you to stitch directly onto!
I love typography and I always felt that some sort of alphabet art was an essential item for a child’s bedroom! I wanted to design something without letters but with individual elements instead. My daughter, Felicity loves singing her ABCs and pointing things out, so I thought it would be a great idea to make a game of it.
To make each element easily recognisable, I chose to stick to the more traditional colours but used 3-4 different shades of the same colour to add depth and give that ‘watercolour’ vintage style. I had planned on only using foods but it was proving too difficult, especially for X, Y and Z! So I decided to use a mix of foods, animals and everyday items children would recognise.
